It's Fall Cleaning Time + Multiple Book Giveaway Where Everybody Wins

Some folks like to do spring cleaning, but around my house spring = mud season, so autumn is the time of year we start to clear up the clutter around the house. My husband and I are both bibliophiles, so books seem to accumulate more than we're able to keep up with. Yesterday I started working on the downstairs level, clearing out books from my kitchen table:

...the bathroom:
Notice that the entire top shelf is clear (though not for long)!
...the end of the hallway, where we had books double-stacked on top of the case beyond the crossbar of the, er, cross
Roxie gives the photo some scale. She's 150 pounds.
and the back hallway, where both of us just seem to unload armfuls of books at a time whenever we walk in the door:
Note that there are only a few double stacks now
At first I thought it was going to feel brutal; after all, books are friends and we don't throw away friends, do we? After the first half hour it felt easier, and not long after that I moved through the shelves ruthlessly like Sherman through Atlanta, though with decidedly less burning.  I may give books away, but I trust I'll never be a book burner.
These are for donation.
By the end of the afternoon, I had culled the herd and rearranged the keepers, created a section of Caribbeana, created stack upon stack of books to be donated, and even four boxes of books to sell back to my bookstore's used book buyer for store credit. (Hah!  I may be getting rid of books, but that doesn't mean that I don't want more.)

These four boxes are to sell for store credit.
Now we get to the FREE BOOKS part. There's a local charity program that will accept ARCs as donations, and I'm happy to donate them, but if you see a particular title in the close-ups below that you'd like to be reading, I'll send it to you by snail mail if you live in the US or Canada. Just drop me a comment below and send me an email with your physical address.  My blog doesn't have hundreds of followers (though apparently there are lots of lurkers out there), so I don't anticipate going broke with this request, but I will set a time limit on it: one week from today's post.

YA & middle grade. Mock not the Twilight books

Stack #5, part 1

Stack #5, part 2
If you want a free book but don't know which one you want, I'll pick one for you based on what you tell me your interests are. I've got lots of literary fiction, lots of commercial fiction, and a couple of stacks of YA (do NOT judge me for those Twilight books, peoples). I've not read every book in these stacks, and some I'm only giving away because I have multiple copies (I'm looking at YOU, Wiley Cash and Andre Dubus).

So, um, yeah.  Pick yer book. Let me know. I'll send it to you.  That's pretty much as easy as it gets.
Send your address to me at ejcrowe42 [at] aol [dot] com with a subject line of Book Giveaway or similar.

    1. Thanks! We originally thought we'd put cookbooks in there but we ran out of space for "regular" books. It's two bookcases with one big plank-like thing resting on top.

    1. Oops--didn't realize that I hit "post" instead of "save!" I've now finished it up, so maybe come back and take a look to see if there's a book you'd like.

  3. Awesome!! I have to admit, I am probably a 'lurker', since I do not have the time to commit to my own blog but I'm a big book addict. Also, I live in Sunderland, MA so I've been down to your store countless times. From the pictures I could see, the books that I have been hearing such good things about are: Seating arrangements, Mrs Kimble, Red House, A Land more kind than home, and The Tragedy of Arthur. Any of those would be awesome. You have so many great books! (couldn't find your email address on your site though to give my address.......)

    1. well, then, that was a giant oversight on my part! I'll edit my post to include my email address. I'll put one or two aside for you.

Jenna, we're practically neighbors, as by my count I live two towns away from you.

  5. What a great idea! I cannot believe how many books you have to give away, I am impressed! I personally have a hard time parting with any of my books, I am sure my husband would love for me to clear out some of them though.

  6. First up, I LOVE YOUR KITCHEN TABLE! That is fantastic

    1. Yes. It's hard to fit more than 4 people around the table in comfort, but that's okay because books are generally more important than people's comfort.

Lehane is tucked away for you now.

  7. So many books! It's great you're giving them away. I went to a bookswap yesterday where we all brought books (I had a suitvase with 50 books) and then looked through the piles to see if there was something we liked intstead. I was good and only got 4 books - most people got about 10 or so. But it's a nice way to recycle books. The left-over books are going to a charity, so it's win/win for everyone.

    1. Judith, that's a great idea. i'll have to see if someone around here would like to organize something like that.

i actually went to a tent book sale yesterday. usually i have trouble not buying stacks of books when they're $1 for hardcovers and 50 cents for paperbacks, but I only bought two. That's progress, I think.

    1. Melody, unfortunately that is the first request I've had where the book was already spoken for (request came via email and not a comment here). You're right--it's a good 'un. Are there any others here you might want in its stead?

  10. Just catching up on my blog reading before I finally clean up my own overly neglected blog(s). I just wanted to say I love your kitchen table! Oh, and I also love the idea of giving your books away. Like you, I don't think I could ever actually throw a book out; but I have given many away over the years, most ending up going to charities. I tried to sell some at the odd yard sale I hosted over the years, but it just didn't seem right somehow. If you still have any books left (is it a week yet?) Am I too late?) I think I would like to take you up on the kind offer to mail to Canada as well as the US. An e-mail is on its way to you!

  11. Wow! What a nice offer! I really love that you are donating the bulk of your books, that's great! Based on the books in your piles, I'll be following your posts closely and enjoying many of your reviews!

It's great you have a shelf in your bathroom and your big bookshelves are gorgeous.

If you're still willing to send a book, I'm in NYC area I'd love any of these five wonderful books ~ Red House, In One Person, The Garden of Last Days, When the Killing's Done or Mrs. Kimble.

  13. A big thanks to everybody who read the post and requested a book. The limited time offer is now over, which is just as well because I have a large stack o' books to mail sometime before the year is out.

If I sent you a reply email, it means I'm reserving a book for you and will get it out to you eventually. Hope y'all enjoy reading them!
