Mailbox Monday

So...this is actually my first time participating in Mailbox Monday, but I wanted to get one last blog post in before I head out for vacation and this seemed like as good a way of doing that as any.  My bags are packed, our house & pet sitter is all set up in our guestroom, our kitchen is stocked with her favorite foods, and my husband and I are beside ourselves with anticipation of getting to Anguilla.

The good news is that one of the books I wanted to read arrived just in the nick of time.  I had requested from my Penguin sales rep a copy of Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt's new book of stories called Concerto to the Memory of an Angel, published by Europa, and it was sitting here waiting for me at work today.  Yay!  I can't decide whether to take it for my flight or save it to read on the beach.  I've read his two previous collections of stories on my two previous summer vacations, so I'm happy to be able to keep up with my own tradition.

And though I already picked up a copy at BEA, the good folks at Algonquin sent me another ARC of Hillary Jordan's forthcoming novel, When She Woke (which I reviewed here, if you're interested).  Glad to have a second copy to share with somebody 'cause this is a really quick read and a major departure from Jordan's first book.

And last but not least, I also received a comp copy from the publisher of book three of Sarah Rees Brennan's excellent trilogy, The Demon's Surrender.  Her books are good, and though I still prefer her fanfiction, this book will probably also make its way to Anguilla.

  3. I haven't heard of the Concerto book. But I have heard of When She Woke. In fact, this is a book that I really want to read, though I haven't heard back from the publishers. :-(

Have fun with your new books!

  4. What a mistake it was to write it, alas! Comparisons from the very start of career = sad for me. But I very much hope you enjoy the book, and hope it does get to Anguilla.

  5. no, no, no! I'm so sad to read that you think the fanfiction was a mistake. you absolutely perfected angst with your DM+HP stories. your new trilogy is excellent--excellent, I say! The writing has grown with each book and the very fact that you created a trilogy with a different narrator in each book and carried it off very well is a testament to your talent. The Demon's Surrender will definitely have a spot in my backpack. You say you have the best fans, but to regret your earliest, unpublished writing is to diminish the work that brought you many of your fans to begin with. So please embrace it. And us.

  6. I embrace all fans of my books. ;)

The rest of it carries a lot of bad memories I reeeeally do not want to get into, and I do and will always feel it was a mistake that hurt my books. (I mean, look at this post. 'I prefer the kid she used to babysit to her own kid' is a sad thing to hear!)

But I am very grateful for all fans of the books, no matter how they found me! I really am. And I'm sorry if I made you sad, and I truly hope you enjoy the book.

  7. Hey Emily...so I log onto facebook this afternoon and what do I see? Algonquin posted a link to Emily Crowe, the Bookseller that rocks!

Don't know if you had a chance to see the piece, so I'm posting it here:
