Perhaps, the white "4" refers to his fourth bestfriend, Shiro (White Root).

I also made a review of this book at the ff. link:

http://www.literateknolohitura.com/2014/10/haruki-murakami-colorless-tsukuru-tazaki-and-his-years-of-pilgrimage.html

Thanks!Roy Cortezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06467091827548193889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5257036732683611349.post-26272649175405675082014-09-04T13:47:47.619-04:002014-09-04T13:47:47.619-04:00YES. And yes, I can confirm your theory, because "4" is 四, but when said aloud, is homophone for "死" (for those reading, google only if you want the spoiler) and is a very, very unlucky number as a result. Additionally, the color white symbolizes 死 and is worn after such "occasions". Good catch! ;)Etudesquehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13106938419901219249noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5257036732683611349.post-79634768741431157892014-08-31T17:45:23.169-04:002014-08-31T17:45:23.169-04:00I will be happy to appreciate this for you, when I...I will be happy to appreciate this for you, when I get round to it :) (I have like 6 or so of his books that I actually own to read, so I figure I can wait for this in paperback).
