Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Characters

I'm jumping back on the Top Ten Tuesday bandwagon this morning to participate in this week's question, asked by the good folks over at The Broke and the Bookish: What are your top ten all-time favorite characters?

Well, I rather despite the construction "all-time favorite" since it implies that from here on out, I will form no more opinions about my favorite things, or that nothing I encounter later in life will equal what I've encountered so far.  So I'm modifying it to mean my top ten characters I've encountered in literature so far. Some are the protagonists and some play a supporting role, but all of them are wonderful in their own way. In no particular order:

1. Thursday Next from the Jasper Fforde series.

2. Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables.

3-4. Samwise Gamgee and Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings.

5. Meg Wallace from A Wrinkle in Time.

6-8. Luna Lovegood, Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series.

9. Katniss Everdeen  from the Hunger Games trilogy

10. The Murray Twins, Poppet & Widget, from The Night Circus. (I'm counting them as one since they're twins and, you know, inseparable)

Oddly enough, there are no Austen characters on my list this week.  Usually Austen appears on all of my TTT lists, but I figure she's getting enough airtime from the rest of y'all this week that I can give Elizabeth, Darcy, and Colonel Brandon a skip for now without feeling too guilty.  :)

Who's on your list this week?

  1. Great list! I had a hard time with the all-time favorites as well. I limited mine to recently read favorites. There are so many to choose from!

  3. Good list! Mine would probably include Severus Snape, Joe Kavalier (Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay), Elizabeth Bennett, Mr. Darcy, Colonel Brandon, Mattie Gokey (A Northern Light), Charlotte Doyle (True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle), Tyrion Lannister (Song of Ice and Fire), Diggory (Professor) Kirke (Magician's Nephew; Lion, Witch, Wardrobe), & hmmm... probably Samwise Gamgee.

  4. Aw, yay these characters! Especially Meg Wallace. You don't hear too much about her lately, but she's amazing.

  7. I love Meg in A Wrinkle in Time. I really need to put that on my re-read list.

  8. I hate the 'all time favorite' thing too. It makes me feel guilty when I leave people out and then my list just keeps getting longer and longer!

  10. Severus Snape would probably be on my list too, and Katniss would definitely make it. You know, I wish there were more female characters like Katniss Everdeen. It would do teenage girls everywhere a great deal of good.

  11. Darlyn, I've been saying the same thing about Katniss since I first encountered her. what a strong female character!

  12. OK, OK, OK: I will read The Night Circus. I will.
And: Once again we are freakishly aligned in our tastes. Snape? Check. McGonnagal? So underrated. I do think that Dobby trumps Luna, but that's just me and my Catholic guilt talking.
And Meg? I just re-read A Wrinkle In Time (after 30 years away) for my book group's blast-from-the-past month and my eyebrows pretty well stuck to my hairline the entire time, so Meg-inspired I now realize I've been my whole geeky-chic life.
And Samwise and Anne Shirley and...
I had such a busy week that I didn't get to this Top Ten, but now I wish I had.
